Ebola Infection

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), "Community engagement is key to successfully controlling outbreaks."

AIFO's work at community level gives it a unique opportunity to contribute to the fight against Ebola infection in Liberia.

As recommended by WHO, social mobilization has a key role in control of Ebola infection by promoting health education about prevention of disease, identification of contacts, surveillance in the communities for early detection of cases, promoting safe buriel of persons dying from Ebola.

Persons dying from Ebola infection are mostly poor persons. The fears about the deadly infection isolates these persons and their families, leaving them at risk of hiding, late diagnosis and spread among the contacts. Through its network of community workers and its long relationship with individuals and communities in rural areas AIFO offices in Liberia are in a unique position to help the fight against Ebola. AIFO has offices in Monrovia, Bong and Grand Gedeh to coordinate the humanitarian aid to the communities that need it most.
